Chapter 15 from the Welding Handbook, Ninth Edition, Volume 2, “Welding Processes, Part 1,” has been selected by the AWS Product Development Committee as a service to industry professionals. This chapter describes these arc cutting and gouging processes and provides information on fundamentals, required equipment, materials and consumables, process variables, applications, quality, economics, and safe practices. The advantages and limitations of the processes and factors affecting process selection are discussed. Plasma arc cutting and air carbon arc cutting are addressed in detail in this chapter because of the wide range of applications for these processes. The remaining processes, used less frequently, are discussed briefly in a subsequent section of the chapter.
