Chapter 7 from the Welding Handbook, Ninth Edition, Volume 2, “Welding Processes, Part 1,” has been selected by the AWS Product Development Committee as a service to industry professionals. Because of the numerous similarities between plasma arc welding and gas tungsten arc welding, an understanding of the GTAW process is helpful in appreciating the many comparisons of the two processes made in this chapter. Information on the GTAW process can be found in Chapter 3 of this volume. More detailed information is provided in this chapter on the areas in which plasma arc welding differs from gas tungsten arc welding. Also discussed in this chapter are plasma arc welding equipment and materials, process variations, applications, procedures, techniques, and weld quality, followed by brief comments on comparative costs. The final section of this chapter provides information and references for safe practices in plasma arc welding.
